FaDSS Day on the Hill

Each year the Iowa Family Development and Self-Sufficiency (FaDSS) staff visited the Capitol for the annual Day on the Hill event in February. The purpose of this day is to educate legislators about the FaDSS program, to share successes of the program and to help our legislators to understand that FaDSS is worth the investment. Booths were set-up with FaDSS information and five FaDSS staff (Wendy Balles, Program Coordinator, and FaDSS Program Specialists Jodi Suntken, Patti Burma, Chelsea Chisholm and Cody Samec) met with area legislators including Senator Amanda Ragan, Senator Merlin Bartz, Representative Henry Rayhons, Representative Linda Upmeyer, Representative Sharon Steckman, and Representative John Wittneben. FaDSS staff and program participants were able to inform our representatives about the importance of the Family Development and Self-Sufficiency Program and the impact it has had on families in north central Iowa.

The Family Development and Self-Sufficiency (FaDSS) Grant Program was created during the 1988 Iowa General Assembly. The Department of Human Services contracts with the Department of Human Rights, Division of Community Action Agencies to administer the FaDSS Grant Program. The Department of Human Rights subcontracts with eighteen grantees statewide to provide FaDSS services and a FaDSS Council to provide policy-making and advisory oversight for the program. FaDSS was originally intended to provide self-sufficiency development services through an intensive home visitation process to families who were at risk of long-term welfare dependency. Currently, FaDSS serves as a supportive service assisting families enrolled in Iowa’s Family Investment Program (FIP) who have significant or multiple barriers to employment as they work towards their self-sufficiency goals.
